The KNVB's decision to fly back to the Netherlands from Belgrade and then on to Greece has been labelled a huge mistake by Verweij. "It's ridiculous that you're in Belgrade, just a half hour or an hour from Thessaloniki, and you fly back to the Netherlands only to fly to Greece again. You're basically calling it quits on yourself," he said. Driessen added that the KNVB should have taken more responsibility for the busy schedule. "The players are really falling like dominoes," Verweij noted. "As a medic, you have to patch them up every time."

The criticism comes as the Dutch national team continues to struggle with injury problems. Cody Gakpo, Brian Brobbey, Lutsharel Geertruida, and Jan Paul van Hecke all fell victim to injuries during the international period.
