According to Janssen, Meerdink was one of the standout players for the Netherlands, who he believes has the potential to be a top striker. "I think he needs the maximum challenge, because I saw a different Meerdink at the Netherlands national team compared to AZ," Janssen said. "He demands more from himself, in terms of putting pressure on the opponent's goal, running past the goalkeeper, and creating space for the defenders." Janssen felt that Meerdink played at 100% during the match against Servië, whereas he only seemed to be playing at 60% for AZ.
