Pitso Mosimane, a 62-year-old football manager, previously served as Bafana Bana boss between July 2010 and June 2012, BBC Football reports. He replaces Hugo Broos, who stepped down after five years in the role when his contract expired at the end of July. Mosimane's most recent managerial role was at Iranian side Esteghlal, but he has now returned to the South African national team.
Mosimane has enjoyed significant success in club football, winning the African Champions League three times with Sundowns and Egyptian giants Al Ahly. He has also had spells managing in Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, and Iran. The Belgian-led side, under Hugo Broos, achieved a third-placed finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the last 32 of this year's World Cup.
The decision to rehire Mosimane was reportedly approved by the South Africa Football Association's executive committee on 8 August, but he was unveiled to the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday after finalising his contract and technical team. The length of his deal has not been announced.
