The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is set to return to East Africa for the first time in 51 years. The tournament is scheduled to take place from 19 June to 17 July 2027. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host the event.
African football boss Patrice Motsepe has called for a "heightened sense of urgency" from the co-hosts, as stadiums need to be ready for testing in around three months' time. The Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi is one of the main areas of concern, as it is still under renovation and has seen limited progress over the past seven months. The playing surface is yet to be laid, and work is required on cabling for broadcast and television operations, floodlights, and the stadiums' sky boxes.
Motsepe also pointed to the demands created by hosting hundreds of VIPs and heads of state, saying some stadium designs will need to be reconfigured. Kenya's cabinet secretary for sports Salim Mvurya insists preparations will be completed on time. Motsepe is due to return to the region for a final assessment visit in January, making December a significant month for Kenya's preparations.
