Mendilibar's departure brings an end to a two-and-a-half-year tenure marked by three domestic titles and the Ligue Conférence in 2024, Olympiakos' first European trophy. The 57-year-old was replaced by compatriot Imanol Alguacil, who has been without a job since mid-February. Alguacil, a former Real Sociedad coach, won the Coupe du Roi with the Basque side in 2021.

Alguacil's appointment marks his second stint abroad, following his time at Al Shabab in Saudi Arabia. Olympiakos currently sits third in the Greek Championship, having lost none of their opening three matches. The club will participate in the Ligue Europa from Wednesday.
