Matías Viña, a 28-year-old Uruguayan footballer, has joined Brazilian club Cruzeiro on loan from Flamengo until December 2026. This move comes after Viña made 15 appearances for River Plate, where he was excluded from the main team's training and forced to train with other players in an alternative location.
Viña has played for several clubs, including Palmeiras, Roma, Sassuolo, Bournemouth, and River Plate. He was a key player in Palmeiras' 2020 Libertadores and Copa do Brasil wins. The Uruguayan footballer was loaned to Bournemouth and Sassuolo after his first season with Roma.
Viña has now joined Cruzeiro, where he will compete for a position mainly with Gabriel Rojas, who has not established himself since the arrival of Racing in the middle of the year. Lucas Villalba, a centre-back by trade, has also made some appearances playing on the left side of the field.
Viña's recent history has been marked by instability, but he did participate in the World Cup under Marcelo Bielsa, entering a group stage match. He was not called up by Diego Forlán for the FIFA Date at the end of this month.
Viña's career has been marked by highs and lows, including a stint with Roma, where he was paid R$ 67 million. He was loaned to Bournemouth and Sassuolo in the following years and then joined Flamengo in 2024 for R$ 42 million. However, he struggled to establish himself in the team and was eventually loaned to River Plate, where he made only 15 appearances.
Viña has now joined Cruzeiro on a loan deal with an option to buy for $4.5 million.
