According to a report by the BBC, Manchester United's goal against Ipswich Town was allowed to stand, despite Harry Maguire appearing to handle the ball before scoring an own goal. The ball came off Maguire's arm, before he then moved a few yards forward into the box. His shot was going well wide and deflected into the back of the net off Jacob Greaves, officially an own goal. This is one of three exemptions for when accidental handball by the scorer does not count. The exemptions include a goal not being immediate, a goal scored by a team-mate, and an action of a defender resulting in an own goal. The handball law often serves to confuse supporters, as it did in this instance. Harry Maguire is still without a goal in 2026.
