According to Het Nieuwsblad, Kevin Mac Allister, the 28-year-old Union captain, had been expecting a transfer to a top European league this summer. However, serious interest failed to materialise. Mac Allister felt ready for a new challenge and Union were open to a transfer if a suitable offer was made.
Mac Allister believes his age has played a significant role in the lack of interest, with top clubs now favouring younger players. He stated, "Ploegen willen nu alleen nog maar jongens van 20 of 21 jaar halen" ("Clubs now only want to buy boys of 20 or 21 years old"). Mac Allister feels he is performing well at Union, who reached the Champions League last season, and is disappointed that he has not been given the opportunity to move to a stronger league. He added, "Ik voel dat ik het hier goed doe en ik speel in een ploeg die al jaren competitief is en vorig jaar nog Champions League speelde" ("I feel that I am doing well here and I play in a team that has been competitive for years and played in the Champions League last season"). Mac Allister's contract has been extended until mid-2031.
