The break is a result of the FIFA's decision to combine the September and October international breaks, which will reduce the number of trips for national team players. However, this change also means that the international break in September has been extended by a week, with national teams playing more matches in a shorter period. The Dutch national team, for example, will play four matches in 16 days. The Eredivisie will resume with a match between PSV and SC Heerenveen on Friday 9 October, while the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, and La Liga will also resume on the same day. The Premier League and Serie A will follow a day later.
