Chelsea had agreed a deal with Monaco for the transfer of Camara, with the London club offering around £47 million, approximately €54 million. The 22-year-old Senegalese midfielder had already agreed a six-year contract with Chelsea, with an option for an additional season, and had completed his medical examination. However, Monaco pulled out of the deal, reportedly due to Chelsea's transfer of Folarin Balogun to Everton. Chelsea is said to be "woedend" (angry) and has accused Monaco of unprofessional behaviour. The transfer was seen as a way for Chelsea to replace Enzo Fernández, who joined Manchester City for a reported €146 million.
