Mendy opened the scoring in the 19th minute, with a shot that ricocheted in off the underside of the bar. Atalanta equalised in the 41st minute, with Gianluca Scamacca scoring from an angled drive. However, Cagliari took the lead again in the 61st minute, with Maldini converting a penalty awarded for a foul on Sead Kolasinac. This was the first penalty converted in Serie A this season, and only the second awarded in the opening 34 games. Cagliari's win was their second of the season, with the Sardinians now on eight points after four matches.
