The French Football Federation (FFF) had previously demoted Bordeaux from the fourth to the sixth tier due to the club's financial problems. The French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) had also rejected the club's financial plans. In an attempt to address the financial issues, the new owner Sparta Capital, a British investment firm, presented a plan worth €10.6 million. However, the court deemed these guarantees insufficient.
Bordeaux was acquired by Gérard Lopez in July for just €1, after he had purchased the club in 2021. Under his leadership, the six-time French champions suffered multiple relegations and eventually dropped to the fourth tier. The club's financial problems have now become so severe that bankruptcy and judicial liquidation are looming. If Sparta Capital decides to withdraw, it could even mean the end of the current club structure.
Bordeaux has a rich history, having won the French championship six times, most recently in 2009 under Laurent Blanc, and the Coupe de France four times. The club will now have to navigate its way back up through the sixth tier, but it remains to be seen if it will be able to survive in its current form.
The club's immediate future is uncertain, with the possibility of a complete overhaul or even the end of the current club structure hanging in the balance.
