Telstar played almost the entire match with a man down, but managed to secure a result through two well-taken penalties from Ronald Koeman junior. The first penalty was scored in the 92nd minute after the referee spotted a handball from debutant Belgian Mathieu Maertens. The second penalty was scored in the 101st minute after VAR confirmed the ball had hit Maertens' hand in the box.
The match in Velsen-Zuid was an early-season must-win for Cambuur, who had a poor start to the season with 16 conceded goals in their first four matches. Telstar's task was made easier when they were reduced to 10 men after Nökkvi Thórisson was given a red card.
