Sofyan Amrabat, a 30-year-old midfielder for Ajax, has announced he will no longer play for the Moroccan national team while Mohamed Ouahbi is the coach. Amrabat, who has played 78 times for the Moroccan national team, made this decision public through an Instagram post. He stated that he is no longer able to play for his country under the current coach, Ouahbi, who took over as coach in March 2026, succeeding Walid Regragui.
Amrabat played in the World Cup for the Moroccan national team, but only in the last group stage match and as a substitute in the knockout stage matches against Canada and France. He has expressed his respect for the team and other stakeholders involved, and has stated that the door to his return is not closed. However, he will not make himself available for selection as long as Ouahbi remains in charge.
Morocco's national team reached the quarterfinals at the 2026 World Cup, a feat that led the Moroccan football association to extend Ouahbi's contract for another four years.
