Al-Taawoun fans were heard shouting chants of 'Jota' during a league game against Al-Hilal, prompting a reaction from the Saudi Football Federation. The Federation stated that the fans' chants violated the Disciplinary and Ethics regulations, leading to a penalty increase in accordance with (39-4) of the disciplinary and ethics regulations. The club has been ordered to play their next two home league matches behind closed doors and fined 100,000 riyals (£19,796).
Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for rival club Al-Nassr, had previously called for lifetime bans for the fans involved. The Al-Hilal midfielder Rúben Neves, who played with Jota for Wolves and Portugal, was seen gesturing to the sky in response to the chants. Jota died in the summer of 2025 along with his brother André Silva following a car crash in Spain.
