ESPN reported on 15 September 2026, that Savannah DeMelo, a midfielder for Racing Louisville FC, is suing University of Louisville Health and two physicians. The lawsuit alleges that the physicians failed to properly diagnose her conditions prior to a cardiac incident that took place on the field in Seattle on 14 September 2025. DeMelo revealed the reason for her collapse for the first time on Monday, marking the one-year anniversary of the event, stating she "collapsed due to an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia, that caused me to go into cardiac arrest."
The lawsuit alleges multiple forms of negligence against Dr. Jennifer Daily and Dr. Sarabjeet Suri, and the University of Louisville Health for failure to properly diagnose and treat her medical conditions, including her cardiac disease. DeMelo's in-game health scare is the second known on-field cardiac incident from the 2025 NWSL season, following Angel City FC defender Savy King's collapse in May 2025. DeMelo has not played this season, but could return to the field as early as this month, a source told ESPN.
