The match was an early relegation dogfight, with both teams still looking for their first points of the season. Monza managed to eliminate Torino to reach the Coppa Italia Round of 16, whereas Parma crashed out to Cremonese. The hosts lost Adrian Bernabé along with Hans Nicolussi Caviglia, but gave deadline day signing Diego Carlos his debut. Gustavo Varela, Patrick Cutrone, Jan Ziolkowski, Patrick Ciurria, and Matteo Pessina were injured for Ivan Juric’s side.
Monza took the lead when Jay Robinson hit a right-foot scorcher into the far bottom corner from the edge of the area. However, Parma got their equaliser when Simone Lontani steered his effort through a sea of legs with the inside of the right boot into the far bottom corner from 12 yards. It was the teenage ex-Milan youth product’s first Serie A goal, after two this season in the Coppa Italia.
The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams creating chances. Dany Mota tested Edoardo Corvi one-on-one after sprinting forward, and Corvi needed a desperate save to deny Colpani’s header on a free kick from close range. A dangerous Birindelli ball flashed across the face of goal beyond both Folorunsho and Robinson, but the spoils were ultimately shared.
Parma and Monza will look to build on this result as they face their next opponents in the Serie A.
