This is in line with the trend of the past few years, as it happened under Ronald Koeman that there were no Ajax players in the Oranje selection. In November 2025, for example, Wout Weghorst (now at FC Twente) was still out due to injury. In other international periods, Weghorst was usually present, as were Brian Brobbey and Jorrel Hato in recent years, before they left Ajax for the Premier League.
The Amsterdam lake with potential internationals for Xavi to fish from is currently very small. In the current selection of trainer Míchel, there is only one candidate, Youri Baas. For Steven Berghuis (34) and Davy Klaassen (33), Oranje seems to be a station passed. For talents like Aaron Bouwman (currently injured) and Dies Janse, it's still too early.
Good performances at top Dutch clubs in recent years have not automatically led to a fixed place in the Netherlands team. During the World Cup, Weghorst and PSV's Guus Til were the only players from the Eredivisie. In Xavi's first selection, that are PSV players Ruben van Bommel and Lutsharel Geertruida and Feyenoord revelation Gjivai Zechiël. Other promising players from the Dutch competition, such as Ro-Zangelo Daal, Givaio Read and Luciano Valente, will have to wait for their chance.
