Midtjylland's transfer strategy has yielded €62m in sales, with the departure of Franculino Djú for Trabzonspor and Darío Osorio's move to Crystal Palace on loan with an obligation to buy. The deals were completed in 48 hours at the end of the window, following the departures of Aral Simsir and Lee Han-beom for Club Brugge. The next batch of recruits included David Martínez, a 20-year-old Venezuela international from the MLS side LAFC, for €7.3m, a Danish record.
The club's methodical approach, which includes mandatory English lessons at least three times a week, has been key to their success. Technical director Kristian Kjær says that communication is crucial in a squad with 17 nationalities from five continents. Midtjylland employ coaches from all over the world to help new arrivals settle in. The club's approach has paid off, with Osorio making his first Palace start in their 3-0 Carabao Cup win against Middlesbrough.
The fee for Osorio is in line to become the most expensive Danish top-flight sale, with Palace having an obligation to pay £22.3m next summer and up to another £3.4m in bonuses. Midtjylland are hoping that the arrival of Martínez will help to fill the void left by Osorio and Djú, their top scorer last season with 17 goals.
