The incident occurred after Corinthians' Kaio César equalised against Estudiantes, with Memphis Depay allegedly making insulting gestures towards the Argentine club's fans on social media. Estudiantes has strongly condemned the behaviour, stating that the complaint is about the "beledigende gebaren" (insulting gestures) of Depay, which were clearly directed at their supporters. The club underlined the importance of upholding the principle that "Respect is the starting point".
The CONMEBOL disciplinary committee will soon have to make a ruling on the case and inform the clubs involved. The return leg in Brazil is scheduled for the night of Wednesday 16 to Thursday 17 September, with kick-off at 02:30 hours.
