Martinez, who joined Inter from Genoa in 2024, has been Inter's outright no.1 this season. However, the club had considered bringing in a new goalkeeper during the summer transfer window, with Guglielmo Vicario and Emiliano Martinez among the names linked with a move to San Siro. Instead, Inter decided to promote Martinez to the starting goalkeeper role and signed Ivan Provedel, a 33-year-old goalkeeper, to provide cover and competition.
Provedel is now eyeing an opportunity in the Inter starting XI, following Martinez's errors in back-to-back matches. Martinez was caught far too easily in possession inside his own six-yard box for the second goal of the game when Inter lost 2-1 away against Real Madrid in their first Champions League test of the season last week. He also made another error in Inter's 5-3 comeback victory over Udinese in Serie A on Monday evening, allowing Jurgen Ekkelenkamp to score from a low cross into the six-yard box.
La Gazzetta dello Sport has questioned whether Inter should stick with Martinez or hand the no.1 spot over to the more experienced Provedel, who may offer a touch more security.
