The victory was thanks in part to a stunning strike from Dutch international Daniëlle van de Donk. London City Lionesses strengthened their squad over the summer to compete with the established teams in England. Stars like Kadidiatou Diani, Mapi León and two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas joined the team in London. Van de Donk, along with fellow Dutch internationals Isa Kardinaal, started the match against United. However, the Dutch defender Dominique Janssen was at fault for an own goal after nine minutes, with her teammate Julia Zigiotti heading the ball into her own net. Van de Donk then sealed the win for London City Lionesses with a goal on the advice of French player Delphine Cascarino.
