Liverpool had been keen to bring Gusto, 23, to Anfield on a temporary basis, but Chelsea's pursuit of a long-term deal scuppered the plans. The west London club had been looking to replace Enzo Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in the summer. Chelsea's interest in Gusto was not their only transfer target, as they made a late attempt to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, but the Cherries had no interest in selling the player.
Arsenal, meanwhile, rejected an enquiry from Chelsea for 27-year-old Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Manchester United are planning to make three defensive signings next summer, with some of their key defenders set to be on trial this season. The Red Devils are also keen to loan out striker Chido Obi, who is interested in joining a club in the Netherlands or Denmark.
Everton were interested in signing AS Monaco full-back Jordan Teze, but the Ligue 1 club's management vetoed the Netherlands international's exit.
