Spanish authorities have issued a warning about a new cybercrime modality that takes advantage of the start of the football season, promising free access to content to camouflage malicious software. The warning comes from La Guardia Civil, a Spanish law enforcement agency, and is confirmed by Marca La Liga.

The modality involves promising free access to sports retransmissions, with the virus executing in the background once the victim installs the malicious application on their mobile phone. This allows the perpetrators to remotely monitor all information entered on the mobile phone's keyboard, capture screens, and bypass security measures of installed applications, including banking apps, to obtain private keys and drain bank accounts.

In Cantabria, seven cases have been detected, with a total of 25,000 euros stolen. The authorities have warned of an increase in the spread of fraudulent links through social media and unsecured sources promoting apps for watching or following football matches.

The next step is for football fans to be cautious when downloading apps or clicking on links, especially those that promise free access to sports content.
