Smit has only played five competitive matches for AZ this season, due to a lingering issue with his groin. The 25-year-old midfielder has admitted to rushing back to action too quickly, which ultimately led to the problem persisting. "I got last of my groin and then started playing again a bit too quickly," he explained. "After that, it came back again with Jong Oranje. That was a shame."

Smit sees this as a valuable learning experience, one that has taught him to be more honest with himself and the club's medical staff. "This is a lesson for me," he said. "I need to be more honest with the physios and myself. It's a bit of a trap for me to want to play as many games as possible. If it doesn't feel right, it's better to miss one or two games." Despite this, Smit is eager to get back to full fitness and is already looking to the future. "My body feels good now, but I'm not feeling 100% fit yet," he said. "My goal is clear: from now on, I want to play every game as well as I can."
