According to Voetbal International, Heerenveen struggled to find their footing on the artificial turf field against Excelsior Maassluis in the KNVB Beker. The Eredivisionist was matched against the amateur club in the second round of the competition, but a stunning upset was not on the cards. Heerenveen looked uncomfortable on the Zuid-Hollandse artificial turf and played far from their best.

Heerenveen had the majority of the ball possession in the beginning of the second half, but they were unable to create any significant openings against the Excelsior Maassluis defence. It wasn't until over an hour into the game that Heerenveen finally managed to create a scoring opportunity, which was taken by Dylan Vente to give Heerenveen a 0-1 lead.
