Wagner has a wealth of experience in the game, having played for several top clubs including Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen, and the Germany national team. He hung up his boots in 2020 and went on to pursue a coaching career, working with the U20s and later joining the senior national team's coaching staff. Wagner took charge of Augsburg in July 2025, overseeing 14 games during the first half of last season.
Bundesliga club Hannover have been in Germany's second tier since their relegation from the top flight at the end of the 2018/19 season. The Reds finished fourth last season, missing out on the promotion play-off place by just two points. Wagner now faces the task of reviving Hannover's promotion ambitions, and he is confident that his attacking, intense, and brave footballing approach will suit the club and its squad well.
Hannover sporting director Ralf Becker praised Wagner's experience and ability to work closely with young players, saying: “Sandro Wagner has seen and experienced an incredible amount throughout his career as both a player and a coach." Wagner's first game in charge will come at home to Bochum on 20 September, in Hannover's final fixture before a 16-day international break.
