Edu's departure from Nottingham Forest has been confirmed, following a series of high-profile issues at the City Ground. The former Arsenal midfielder had not attended a game since February, and his exit had been expected. His position had come under scrutiny following a falling-out with former manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked last September. Nuno hinted at internal tensions at the time, stating that his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had changed.
Edu's remit at Nottingham Forest included overseeing Greek side Olympiacos and Portuguese club Rio Ave, both of which are owned by Marinakis. He arrived at the club in July 2025, after six years at Arsenal, where he became the club's first sporting director in 2022. During his time at the Gunners, Edu won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups as a player, and brought Mikel Arteta to Emirates Stadium.
Theodore Giannikos, former Olympiacos vice-president, has been appointed chief executive, and will assume the responsibilities of Edu's role. George Syrianos, the club's chief football officer, will also take on additional duties.
