Diego Forlán, Uruguay's new coach, has announced his first list of convoked players for the country's FIFA date, which includes two goalkeepers from Argentine football: Santiago Mele and Thiago Cardozo. According to Olé, Forlán's list features a mix of new faces and experienced players who were part of Marcelo Bielsa's team in North America. Santiago Mele, who is making his first appearance in the Uruguay national team, and Thiago Cardozo, who has experience in Uruguay and was part of the World Cup team, are the two Argentine goalkeepers included in the list.
The list also features players who were part of Bielsa's team in North America, such as Rodrigo Bentancur and Federico Valverde. Notable absentees from the list include Sergio Rochet, Fernando Muslera, Matías Viña, Manuel Ugarte, Nicolás de la Cruz, Santiago Bueno, Emiliano Martínez, and Agustín Canobbio. Miguel Merentiel, who will be available for Boca's Copa Argentina quarterfinals against Racing, is also not included.
Uruguay's next matches will be their friendly matches against Japan on September 24 and 28, and against India on October 6.
