London City Lionesses opened their WSL season with a 2-1 win over Manchester United, with an own goal from Julia Zigiotti Olme and a second-half flick from Daniëlle van de Donk handing them the victory. Manchester United's first shot on target came in the 97th minute, resulting in a consolation goal from Simi Awujo.
Putellas, who captained the team on her debut, was at the centre of attention after her move to the WSL over the summer. In front of watching London City owner Michelle Kang, Putellas took her first steps in England and was delighted to get the season off and running with a victory. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner is one of London City's star recruits over the summer.
London City manager Eder Maestre handed four debuts out in the match, with Mary Earps on the bench due to fitness issues. Earps had some fitness issues in preseason, and they went with Elene Lete who had had more consistent game time before this opener.
Maestre praised Putellas, saying she represents the high standards and can bring leadership to the team. Manchester United's new manager, Olid, was not pleased with her team's performance, but was pleased with improvements she saw in the second half. She said the team needs to work on creating more chances and having more confidence with the ball.
