Owen Wijndal was close to a transfer on Deadline Day, as revealed by Mike Verweij in the Kick-off-podcast of De Telegraaf. A club was interested in Wijndal, but it was a much bigger club than Sint-Truiden. The interested club backed out at the last minute, meaning Wijndal stayed at Ajax.
This move was a major blow to Ajax supporters, who had already begun to accept that Wijndal would be leaving the club. Verweij stated that Wijndal had already decided not to terminate his contract before the news became public. The transfer guarantee for Wijndal disappeared after the interested club backed out, making it no longer a serious option for him to terminate his contract.
Verweij noted that Wijndal would not give up his 2.5 million euros in salary without a fight. The transfer market in Portugal and Saudi-Arabië is still open after the deadline, but Verweij does not expect Wijndal to be interested in either of these options.
