Kraay believes that Koopmeiners is not suited to play in the centre of the defence in serious international matches. However, he does think that Koopmeiners can excel when the Netherlands are in possession of the ball, as he can make great runs into the box. Kraay points out that Koopmeiners has played in various positions, including right winger, number 10 and left midfielder, and has even played on the left flank for Juventus.
Kraay also notes that Koopmeiners has a strong left foot, but thinks that he would be better off taking free kicks in the hope of being fouled rather than playing in the centre of the defence. The centre-back pairing of Van Dijk and Koopmeiners is only suitable for one-off situations, as it is not a viable long-term solution against top teams.
