The 26-year-old forward joined Barcelona from Manchester City in January 2022 for an initial €55million, signing a contract until the summer of 2027. However, with Torres out of contract at the Camp Nou next summer, Barcelona are said to be erring against offering him a new contract.
This decision is likely driven by the fact that Barcelona have already paid Manchester City €10m in add-ons, but they'll have to pay around a further €8m if Torres extends his contract at the Camp Nou. With Torres not becoming a free agent until next summer, he would command a fee in the current transfer window, making it more beneficial for Barcelona to sell him now.
Torres has found the net 65 times in his four-and-a-half years at Barcelona, winning three LaLiga titles and a Copa del Rey. However, he endured a 14-game goal drought between January and April and lost the starting place he'd gained from Robert Lewandowski. This may have contributed to Barcelona's decision to part ways with him.
The Spanish international has had a successful career, scoring the winner in the World Cup final for Spain and reaching the Champions League final with Manchester City. He has also struck 25 times in 65 caps since making his senior Spain debut six years ago.
Barcelona have already offloaded two players for fees this off-season, with goalkeeper Inaki Pena and attacking midfielder Ansu Fati joining Panathinaikos and Monaco respectively. Meanwhile, veteran striker Lewandowski has left following the expiry of his contract, joining MLS side Chicago Fire. In terms of inbound business, Anthony Gordon has been the sole signing so far, joining for £70m.
The deal for Torres to join Paris Saint-Germain is expected to be completed, which might also open up a potential departure for Bradley Barcola, with Liverpool very keen.
