Thiago Almeida, a 17-year-old centre-back from Fluminense's youth team, has been selected to represent Portugal's U18 squad in the Torneio Internacional do Porto. The news was confirmed by Globo Esporte Futebol, citing that this is Almeida's first call-up to the European side.
Almeida, who was born in Rio de Janeiro and holds a European passport due to his Portuguese ancestry, has been a key player in Fluminense's U17 team, which is currently the vice-leader in the Brasileirão Sub-17 with 36 points, five behind Palmeiras. The team has conceded just 15 goals in 17 matches.
The Torneio Internacional do Porto, which takes place from September 21 to October 5 in Porto, Portugal, will feature some of the top U18 teams from Europe. Portugal's squad will face Uzbekistan, Romania, and Turkey in the tournament.
