PSV's trainers were inspired by a tactic from Holstein Kiel last season, which they studied after a defeat against Telstar. Peter Bosz, the PSV coach, observed how difficult it was for his team to put pressure on Telstar and decided to come up with a new approach. This led to the introduction of a unique tactic during their win against Napoli. In a 3-2 formation on a 60x80 metre pitch, PSV sent eight players to the opponent's half, leaving only the two central defenders near the goalkeeper. According to Bosz, the idea behind this tactic was to make the players in the middle say, "Coach, you go and play in the middle, we'll never get the ball anyway."
