According to the Premier League, players who receive medical attention on the field will have to wait outside for a minute, unless they are injured after a foul and the opposing player receives a yellow card. This rule is designed to prevent players from feigning injury to waste time.
The new rules also include a five-second countdown for lateral and goal kicks. If the time limit is exceeded, the ball will be given to the opposing team. This change aims to reduce the number of stoppages in play and keep the game flowing.
Another new rule states that if a player is substituted, they will have 10 seconds to leave the field. If they exceed the time, the incoming player will not be able to enter until the next stoppage in play.
The VAR will also play a more prominent role in the Premier League, with the ability to review second yellow cards to determine or reverse a red card. The VAR will also be able to correct errors in player identification.
A new rule will be implemented for goalkeepers, where if they are attended to by the medical team after a situation that does not involve a head collision, a visible hemorrhage, or a foul that results in a yellow card for the opposing team, the coach will have to choose a field player to replace them for a minute.
The Premier League is introducing these new rules to speed up the game and reduce stoppages in play. The new rules will be put into effect at the start of the 2026/27 season.
