Arteta has stated that the current system can negatively affect players' wellbeing, and that he has been researching other top European clubs to see how they manage their matchday squads. He claims that most of these clubs have more players than the 20 allowed in the Premier League.
The Premier League currently allows top-flight clubs to name 20 players for games, including a minimum of three homegrown players. In contrast, Serie A allows 25-player matchday squads, while La Liga clubs can name a matchday squad of 23. Arteta believes that English teams should be able to operate with larger squads, similar to those in other European leagues, to help sustain the level of demand in international games.
