Corinthians' president, Osmar Stabile, had initially informed Depay that his contract would not be renewed, despite an initial agreement between all parties. Stabile had pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute, prompting Depay to respond angrily and reportedly consider a damages claim of over €30 million. Depay has expressed his desire to stay with Corinthians, citing a strong emotional bond with the club and a reluctance to leave Brazil at this stage in his career.

Depay has submitted a request to Corinthians to reopen the negotiations, which the club's advisory board has agreed to. A special meeting is scheduled for Monday to discuss the matter further. Depay played 79 games for Corinthians over two seasons, scoring 20 goals and providing 15 assists. The Dutch striker returned to Brazil in late July, just as his contract was set to expire on July 31.
