The game had started well for Roma, with Koné scoring in the sixth minute and again in the 37th minute, initially disallowed before a VAR review confirmed neither player had been offside. Inter had created chances, with Martínez missing an open goal from point-blank range and Alessandro Bastoni hitting the post from a narrow angle. However, they were unable to capitalise on these opportunities until the second half.
Martínez released Marcus Thuram down the left and the Argentinian sprinted through the middle to receive the return, finishing brilliantly into the bottom corner in between three defenders. He then equalised in the 79th minute, nodding the rebound on to the bar after Mile Svilar made a stunning reflex stop to keep out Thuram's header at a corner. The draw leaves Roma with two points dropped, but also one gained in the standings and one to their rivals, to their fans, to themselves.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Martínez is unbeaten in 17 games against teams coached by Gian Piero Gasperini, winning 12 and drawing five, while racking up 11 goals. The result leaves Roma and Inter level on 13 points in the Serie A table, with both teams looking to sustain a challenge to the title.
