Liverpool have confirmed that Richard Hughes has formally left his position as sporting director. Hughes, who is 47 years old, had informed the club of his intentions to leave early this year. His departure has been long expected, with the Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal reportedly in line to appoint him to a similar position. Hughes will continue to work with Liverpool until the end of the transfer window. The search for his replacement is already under way, with Liverpool stating that no approach was received from Al-Hilal for Hughes to start work with them this summer. Andoni Iraola, the new head coach, enjoyed a close working relationship with Hughes, who was involved in identifying summer transfer targets, including the signing of Bradley Barcola in a £123m deal. Iraola has since secured his first win with the club, beating Ipswich 2-0.
