The controversy began when Ji So-yun, South Korea's all-time leading goalscorer, was allegedly subjected to a remark by Bae Sun-young during a match between Suwon FC Women and Seoul City Hall on 28 August. Ji says she overheard the comment and footage from the game shows her visibly upset as she talks to the referee. She was subsequently shown a yellow card after confronting Bae.

The KFA has announced that it will use this incident as an opportunity to prevent similar events and strengthen education to create a culture of respect for players, referees, and participants in the WK League. The fair play committee will listen to explanations from those involved and will review the incident, determining disciplinary action based on the outcome.
