Gasperini thinks Malen can break Higuaín's record of 36 goals in a season, which has stood since the 2015/16 campaign. The AS Roma coach praised Malen's ability to create space for himself and then shoot, saying: "His first touch creates space for himself, the second touch gets him ready, and the third shot is fired. I thought to myself: if I can get those three touches closer to the goal, he'll be deadly. And that's indeed what's happening."

Gasperini also identified an area for improvement in Malen's game, saying: "He needs to maintain his hunger, even after scoring two goals. You can make mistakes, but there are different ways to make mistakes. Against Lecce, for example, he was a bit too nonchalant."
