Fofana was out of action for nearly three years after suffering a severe knee injury. He underwent a long and intensive rehabilitation process, which included a spiritual journey. Fofana then joined Heracles Almelo on an amateur basis, where he was given a chance to make a comeback by 29-year-old trainer Vincent Heilmann, who knew him from his youth days at PSV. Heilmann, Fofana's former youth trainer, wanted to give his pupil a second chance in the professional game. Fofana made his return in a friendly match against Excelsior four weeks ago, marking a significant step towards his goal of a major comeback.
