Earnest Stewart believes that PSV's budget of 150 million euros is not sufficient to compete with top European clubs in the Champions League, which have budgets of up to 600 million euros. He thinks that the club should not aim to be successful in the Champions League, as this would be unrealistic and could lead to financial difficulties. Stewart stated, "Als je stuurt op succes in de Champions League, ga je kapot" ("If you aim for success in the Champions League, you'll go bankrupt").
Stewart also acknowledged that Ajax is now a serious competitor for the Eredivisie title, with colleague director Marcel Brands previously stating that it's better for the league if it's more competitive. Stewart found it pleasant that PSV quickly became champions, but understands that it's good for Dutch football if Dutch clubs do well, especially in Europe.
