The fans stormed the pitch, targeting their own players, with one supporter pushing defender Bautista Tomatis and attempting to attack others. Goalkeeper Kevin Martínez, aged 20, defended his teammates and got into a fight with one of the invaders, exchanging blows before being separated. The police had to enter the field to control the situation, interrupting the match for around three minutes before it was eventually ended with Montevideo City Torque's 2-0 victory.
The incident took place amidst Danubio's poor run of results, with the team fighting against relegation. The Mutual de Futbolistas do Uruguai, the players' union, will meet on Wednesday to discuss the episode and may consider a strike in Uruguayan football.
