Former Chelsea player Andy Townsend has expressed his opinion on the potential signing of Djed Spence by Chelsea. Spence, a £35m-rated Premier League full-back, enjoyed a standout World Cup for England, impressing at both left-back and right-back for the Three Lions.
Townsend believes that Spence would be a very good addition for the Blues this summer, especially considering the departure of Marc Cucurella and the availability of Malo Gusto. Chelsea have already strengthened their defence with the arrivals of Maxence Lacroix and Marco Palestra, but Townsend feels as if a new goalkeeper would be something to look at.
The Blues have allowed Filip Jorgensen to depart and join sister club Strasbourg on loan, and there were links to Porto keeper Diogo Costa, but Chelsea have informed talkSPORT they are not true. Townsend thinks that Chelsea could do a lot worse than bringing in Spence, who is now showing what he is capable of.
Spence's future is uncertain, with the 26-year-old having been offered to Liverpool and Manchester United by the player's agency. However, neither side is yet to nibble on the opportunity, and Spence is seeking regular first-team football, which isn't guaranteed under Roberto De Zerbi.
