Arteta is seeking a change to the current rules governing the number of players English clubs can select for Premier League matches. As things stand, clubs can name 20 players on their list, with at least three of those being from their own youth academy. This is in contrast to other top European leagues, where clubs can name more players. For example, in Spain, clubs can name 23 eligible players for a match day, while in Italy, the number is 25. Voetbal International reports that Arteta has repeatedly asked the Premier League if the number of players allowed can be increased, citing the well-being of the players as the main reason. Arteta believes that every team ideally needs more than 20 outfield players to meet the demands of international competitions.
