The Gunners were handed a scare 11 minutes after the restart when Sunderland were awarded a penalty, but David Raya made a brilliant save to palm Enzo Le Fee's spot-kick against the left post. This was followed by a dramatic twist as Arsenal took the lead just two minutes later through a fantastic top-corner finish from Guimarães, his first goal since joining in the summer from Newcastle. Guimarães' goal came in the 58th minute when he fired a superb strike from outside of the area, which crashed off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
According to ESPN Soccer, Arsenal made four switches from their midweek Champions League victory over Napoli, with Riccardo Calafiori, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Christos Tzolis and Kai Havertz all starting. The Gunners controlled the tempo but struggled to break through Sunderland's defence, with Martin Odegaard and Havertz coming close with shots that were tipped over by Robin Roefs. The win sees Arsenal move to 12 points from four games, while Sunderland slip to 4 points from three games.
