The former international player has stated that he would not have adopted this approach as a player himself. Van Hanegem also believes that Johan Cruijff, a legendary figure in Dutch football, would not have supported this method of playing.
Van Hanegem's comments were made during an episode of VP's Willem & Wessel, where he said: "I've heard it's the way it has to be." He continued: "If I were a player and he gave me instructions in this way, I would simply let him go. Look at it."
This unexpected reaction from Van Hanegem has sparked interest in the Dutch football community.
