According to a report by The Associated Press, UEFA's lawyers have stated that the organisation is considering starting a criminal procedure in Switzerland against Infantino and possibly other FIFA officials for criminal management in accordance with Article 158 of the Swiss Penal Code. This move comes after UEFA lifted its boycott against all FIFA competitions, following the cancellation of a project that would have seen Infantino sell a percentage of the commercial rights of tournaments and the World Cup to external capitals.
The conflict between UEFA and FIFA did not end with the cancellation of the project, and UEFA is now preparing a criminal complaint against Infantino. The European football governing body is also working on finding an alternative candidate to Infantino for the presidency of FIFA in the upcoming elections in March 2027. The deadline for submitting candidatures is November 19, and UEFA plans to present its candidate in the coming weeks.
